Losing my Religion

Sale Price:£3,500.00 Original Price:£3,500.00

Oil Painting and gilding on linen.

Size: 70H x 106 W x 3 cm

This painting samples a vignette from Friedrich's Winter Landscape With The Ruins Of The Monastery Of Eldena. That original painting no longer exists, it was destroyed in the bombing of Berlin at the end of the second world war. This painting reimagines the scene and places the Holy Grail levitating above a black cross of the Knights Templar. Masonic gilded geometric stars allude to ceremonial magic and the conjuring of new life from destruction.

The painting is in essence about redemption. The Holy Grail is a treasure that serves as an important motif in Arthurian literature. Different traditions describe it as a cup, dish or stone with miraculous powers that provide happiness, eternal youth or sustenance in infinite abundance, often in the custody of the Fisher King. The term "holy grail" is often used to denote an elusive object or goal that is sought after for its great significance. What was once destroyed can be reborn anew in eternal life through the body of Christ.
