Dawn in the Engadine
Dawn in the Engadine
Painting
Size: 115 H x 200 W x 3.6 cm
Morning light radiates across the icy vista of an alpine valley. This painting represents the mountains at dawn around 5 am in the morning above the town of St Moritz in Switzerland. The view is looking east towards Italy where the sun is about to rise. The position is halfway up the mountain Piz Morteratsch which Alexander had climbed to the summit of that morning. One is invited to meditate upon all the challenges and opportunities the day ahead holds for an explorer of these lofty regions of ice and rock. The total blackness of the landscape within this painting is an allegory for the future mourning climbers and onlookers will feel for the vanished glaciers of the European Alps. Landscape is telling a future story of it becoming rendered dead and its life giving water becoming more scarce. The Glacier its self is a living entity which flows and moves with time remembering in its buried ice strata climatic conditions of the past.
