Corvid-Non-Binary
Corvid-Non-Binary
Original Painting: Oil on Linen.
Size: 107 H x 70 W x 4 cm
This work is a response to sub culture of fetish, sadomasochism and Non-Binary identities. At the time of its making Alexander was exploring Transgender subcultures and such works resulted from these interactions and experiences. Transgender people have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from their assigned sex. Some transgender people who desire medical assistance to transition from one sex to another identify as transsexual. Cryptozoological creatures stand in as mythological allegory for the state of gender or perhaps species fluidity. Appearing sinister brush marks of horned raven forms morph with a sexual human forms. This could be an alter ego, disguise or fantasy. There is deliberate ambiguity as to wether the creature is feeding on its prey or devouring in an act of mating. The work was inspired by costumes and collages of images from magazines. The viewer is invited to take voyeuristic look at the slick surfaces that the glossy paint evokes and suggest.
